Lab Grown Diamonds

Real diamonds, grown with precision instead of mined from the earth — identical in every way that determines beauty, durability, and value. It's the only kind of diamond BlueHira offers, and here's exactly why.

THE BASICS

What Is a Fancy Colored Diamond?

A diamond with a visible color of its own, instead of the
absence of color.

White diamonds are graded from D to Z by how colorless they are. Fancy colored diamonds work the other way around: the more distinct the color, the more the stone stands out. Pink, blue, yellow, green and more are all true diamonds made of the same crystalline carbon. Their color comes from trace elements or subtle changes in the crystal structure.

THE #1 QUESTION

Are Colored Diamonds Real?

Yes. Every one of them.

A fancy colored diamond has the same chemistry, hardness and brilliance as a white diamond. The color is part of the crystal itself, not a dye or a coating. BlueHira's fancy diamonds are grown in a lab with the color built in, then cut, polished and graded like any other diamond.

The Grading System

How Fancy Color Is Graded

Instead of the D to Z scale, labs look at three things and combine them into one color grade.

Hue

The color family itself: pink, blue, yellow,
green and so on. Many stones also carry a
secondary shade, such as purplish pink or
greenish blue.

Tone

How light or dark the color appears, from
pale and airy to deep and rich.

Saturation

The strength of the color, from a soft
whisper to full, unmistakable intensity.

Color refers to the natural tint of a diamond. The closer the diamond is to “colorless” the rarer it is. The industry standard to grading color in a diamond is to assign a letter grade from D (colorless) to J (nearly colorless).

Soft, subtle color. A delicate and elegant choice for those who prefer a hint of color.

The Palette

Fancy Diamond Colors

Each color has its own personality, and every one comes in a range of intensities.

Pink

Romantic and soft, from a
blush whisper to a rich
raspberry.

Blue

Cool and calm, from pale sky
to deep ocean tones.

Yellow

Warm and sunny, from soft
lemon to bold canary.

Green

Fresh and distinctive, a
choice that stands apart from
the usual.

The Science

How Diamonds Get Their Color

In nature, color appears when trace elements or structural changes occur as a diamond forms. In a lab, that process can be guided and controlled.
Boron

Blue

Boron present while the
crystal grows creates blue
tones.

Nitrogen

Yellow

Nitrogen within the crystal
produces yellow, from soft
lemon to bold canary.

Structural change

Pink

Subtle irregularities in the
crystal lattice, caused by
intense pressure in nature,
can create pink.

Radiation

Green

In nature, radiation exposure
deep in the earth tints a
diamond green.

WHY LAB GROWN

Natural vs. Lab Grown Fancy
Colored Diamonds

Visually identical, but lab grown stones offer reliable origin and exceptional access to color.

ORIGIN

Lab grown: controlled above-ground environment

Natural: formed deep underground over millions of years.

COLOR

Lab grown: color is guided with precision

Natural: trace elements or pressure create color.

PRICE

Lab grown: typically far more accessible

Natural fancy colors can command exceptional premiums.

GRADING

Both are graded on hue, tone, and saturation

Independent certification confirms origin and quality.

WHY LAB GROWN

Natural vs. Lab Grown Fancy Colored Diamonds

Vivid natural color is extremely scarce. Growing it in a lab gives you the same real diamond, with far more freedom to choose.

Common Misconceptions

MYTH

Colored diamonds are dyed or coated. Untrue. The color of a fancy
diamond is part of the crystal itself, not a surface coating.

MYTH

Stronger color is always better. Untrue. The best shade is the one you
love. Fancy Light reads as a soft blush, Fancy Vivid as pure, bold color.

MYTH

Colored diamonds are less durable. Untrue. They have the same 10 out
of 10 hardness as white diamonds.

MYTH

Colored diamonds are only for statement pieces. Untrue. Softer shades
sit beautifully in classic settings, and a white diamond halo lets the color
glow.
