Ethical Diamonds FAQ
What are ethical diamonds?
Ethical diamonds are diamonds that have not funded conflict or involved human rights abuses. Lab grown diamonds meet that standard by design, because they are created in a facility and never mined.
Are lab grown diamonds ethical?
Yes. Because no mining is involved, they never enter the supply chains that conflict diamonds travel through.
How can I verify that a diamond is conflict free?
Buy from a jeweler that is transparent about where its diamonds come from, and ask for an independent grading report. Every BlueHira diamond is lab grown and comes with an IGI or GIA report that states its origin.
What is the Kimberley Process?
It is a certification scheme for rough mined diamonds, designed to keep conflict diamonds out of the legitimate trade. It does not apply to lab grown diamonds, which are not mined.
Do ethically sourced diamonds cost more?
Not at BlueHira. Lab grown diamonds typically cost less than mined diamonds of comparable size and quality, and we sell direct from the factory with no retail markup.
Is moissanite the same as a lab grown diamond?
No. Moissanite is a different material with different chemical and physical properties. A lab grown diamond is a diamond, with the same composition, hardness and brilliance as a mined one.
How can I tell if a diamond is lab grown?
You cannot by eye, since lab grown and mined diamonds look identical. The reliable way is the grading report, which states the origin. Many lab grown diamonds also carry a microscopic laser inscription on the girdle.
